This is the first book in a series. I would recommend this book to young boys, if I knew any. This is not the type of sf story I would normally pick up, but I was willing to give it an honest try. It ended up being a DNF for me, though it is a short book and I read a large chunk of it. What I did read, I got through really fast. Some readers could get through it in less than a day. I am not one of those readers. The language used in it is unembellished, making it great for speed-reading. I found it hard to connect with the characters, especially the female ones, and the world building didn’t really draw me in. But, like I said, this isn’t something I’d normally pick up.
The author has an interesting blog, however, that I intend on following. His film reviews are of particular interest to me. I liked what he had to say about The Revenant:
These things all sound very deserving of an award but I simply did not feel it was DiCaprio at his absolute best.
But Tom Hardy, on the other hand, I thought he was incredible and hands down the best actor in the film. He truly disappeared into the character of John Fitzgerald, the main antagonist of the film, and he was excellent. His English accent slipped in a few times here and there in his portrayal of Fitzgerald but not enough to be detrimental. Excellent work by Tom Hardy and very deserving of his Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
